16 year old girl executed for "acts incompatible w chastity" On August 15th, 2004 a 16-year-old girl was hanged in a public square in Neka, Iran. Her death sentence was for "acts incompatible w chastity". Her name was Atefah Rafavi Sahaaleh. The only evidence against Atefah was her own forced confession. Atefah railed against her judge in court for its unfairness, but this was her undoing. Judge Haji Rezai, who was also the local mullah, prosecutor and head of the city administration, personally obtained permission from Iran's Supreme Court to execute her, and put the noose around her neck himself before she was hoisted on a crane jib arm to her death. Atefeh lost her mother in a car accident. Her father was a drug addict. At the age of 13, a 51 year old former government agent started molesting her. On the night of her wedding to a boy who loved her, she was taken by the authorites and soon after executed without knowledge of her family. The Chicago Tribune and ABC's Nightline investigated the case and concluded that De Luna was innocent. DeLuna, a young Hispanic man, was convicted on the basis of a quick on-the-scene witness identification, claimed that the killer was a man named Carlos Hernandez. The prosecution argued that Hernandez was a "phantom." The Tribune found that Hernandez (who died in prison in 1999) was not only no phantom, but also no stranger to law enforcement. In fact, one of DeLuna's prosecutors knew Hernandez well from an earlier homicide investigation. Barber to be executed for 'insulting Islam' Sabri Bogday, a Turkish national, has been sentenced to death by a Saudi court on March 31, 2008 for allegedly cursing the name of God in his barber shop during an argument with a client. Reportedly, Bogday was not represented by a lawyer in court and did not have access to a translator. He denied the charges, but the Court ruled that Bogday committed a crime of apostasy, defection from Islam, under Saudi laws and regarded the testimony by the Saudi client and an Egyptian neighbor as sufficient evidence for the death sentence. The Mekka appeals court upheld the lower court sentence on May 1. Currently held in prison, Bogday could face imminent execution, if his sentence is approved by the King of Saudi Arabia. Bogday has 17 month old child and has lived and worked in Saudi Arabia for over 11 years. Human Rights Watch condemned the death sentence of Bogday and issued a statement, condemning the sentence as "an unequivocal violation of freedom of expression protected under international law." The Turkish Coalition of America urges you to appeal to the Saudi government to commute Bogday's sentence and spare his life. The goal of this campaign is to ask for leniency for Bogday, please note that "attack" letters will not help his case.
