Leo Reisman 's Orch.- Jalousie (tango) 1925 Leo Reisman & His Orch. - Jalousie (Jacob Gade), Tango Tzigane, Columbia 1925 ___________________________________ JACOB GADE (1879--1963) was a Danish violinist and composer, mostly of orchestral popular music. He is remembered in the world for the "Tango Jalousie", premiered September 14, 1925. The tango was an international hit, was featured in over 100 films, and the royalties allowed Gade to devote himself to composition fulltime for the rest of his life. The royalties now fund a foundation for young musicians. Etiketler: Roaring Twenties 1920s Tango 78s American hot dance band schellack |

Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport (1925 - 1998) 香港啟德機場 First of all, this is a collection from YouTube. I would like to thank all the enthusiasts from YouTube especially Mr. Boyd Kelly (airboyd of YouTube) which I used their best fragments to make this special Kai Tak video. Background music is from "633 Squadron" by Mr. Ron Goodwin. Kai Tak Airport VHHH (1925 - 1998) VHHX (since 1998) "traditional Chinese: 啟德機場" was the world's busiest international airport. The growth of Hong Kong put a strain on the airport's capacity. The airport was designed to handle 24 million passengers per year but in 1996, Kai Tak had already handled 29.5 million passengers, plus 1.56 million tonnes of freight, making it the third busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger traffic, and first in terms of cargo. However extremely busy Kai Tak was located in the city center, the Kowloon City "九龍城" (The city of nine dragons "city surrounded by nine mountains"), around by high density buildings, numerous skyscrapers and rugged mountains reaching an altitude of 2000 ft. with single narrow runway (13/31) very close to taxiway jutting out into Victoria Harbour, and further less than 10 Km is Hong Kong Island, another densely populated area with hills up to 2100 ft. The only way approach to Runway 13 was a sharp 47-degree right turn before and of the same level with the checkerboard (a small hill painted with red and white checkerboard at 1:18) at about 100-meter altitude then align with the runway. Often with strong crosswinds, the airport was infamously difficult to land at. However, due to the same reasons, only experience pilots were chosen for the challenging approach and air crash incidents rarely occur. The low altitude manoeuvre was so spectacular that crowded streets of people, multi-storey buildings, vehicles and pavements can easily be "touch". I can hear "WOW" or "My God" from passengers when they aware of the home decorations through apartment windows which is of the same level with the aircraft like flickering of televisions even children say "Hi" to them before landing. In this video, you can found the most extremely landing, but these happened several hundred times per day, and was just the real daily life of Hong Kong people. Variety [1925] Hard to find silent public domain classic which stars Emil Jannings, Lya De Putti, Warwick Ward and Maly Delschaft. Directed by E.A. DuPont. Cinematography by Karl Freund. Silent film with no accompanying soundtrack. The only print I have of this rare film is very weathered, and I decided not to attempt to restore it, other than to correct the projection speed. Title cards in Italian. Superb acting and cinematography elevate this simple tale of a fatal love triangle. I have always loved this film, and hope someone out there will enjoy my sharing it. SERGEI EISENSTEIN'S BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN 1925 Part 1 Eisenstein's three great films about the Russian Revolution - Strike, The Battleship Potemkin and October - were all made between 1924 and 1928, before Stalin had consolidated his power and gained an iron grip on the arts. During this period the Communist Party initially favored Proletkult artists. Strike, made in 1924, Eisenstein's second film and the first of the trilogy, was originally planned as the first of a series of films documenting the pre-revolutionary working class. It turned out to be an artistic success as well as an educational aid and it won an award at the 1925 'Exposition des Arts Décoratifs' in Paris, as well as being commercially exhibited in Germany. On its release in 1925, Strike was poorly received by the Russian public, whose imagination had already been gripped by American films and the comfy folkloric familiarity of their conventional questing heroes and tightly developed narratives. A domestic flop in the Soviet Union, Potemkin was loved by German audiences, although the armed forces were forbidden to see it for fear of mutiny, as were Pennsylvanian audiences on the grounds that it gave American sailors 'a blueprint as to how to conduct a mutiny'.38 When it was eventually screened in the US in 1926, Chaplin declared it to be 'the best film in the world'. In France the authorities burnt all copies they could find - it received only a limited art house screening at Paris film clubs. Despite being banned in the UK until 1954, The Battleship Potemkin has rarely been out of the annual BFI critics' top ten list, and only then when another Eisenstein film has been voted in. It is easy to see why. The Odessa Steps sequence has even now the power to move and excite: '...Eisenstein, in forcing the spectator to create the image by putting together all the relationships between attractions (relationships existing because of the interpenetrating theme), gives to the spectator not a completed image, but the "experience of completing an image".'39 All Eisenstein's elements come together in this perfect piece of cinema and the audience participates in the process of producing meaning. The film documents an event that helped precipitate the 1905 Revolution which shook the Tsarist regime. The battleship Potemkin is a microcosm of Russian society. The ship's officers, doctor and priest - all representing the ruling power structure - pile abuse on top of abuse until maggot infested meat and a threatened mass execution push the sailors to mutiny. The mutineers eventually find sanctuary at the Black Sea port of Odessa, the setting for the film's penultimate sequence, showing Odessa's population supporting the Potemkin mutineers anchored in the bay. The sudden appearance of Tsarist soldiers abruptly reverses the joyous mood as the troops mercilessly advance, shooting everything that moves. Rhythm (cutting) builds with tempo (the pace of action within the frame) as the soldiers descend the steps in relentless solid formation behind the chaotically scattering crowd. This descending action travels left to right across the screen for rapidity (because we read left to right, top to bottom in English, our brains process screen information better in this direction, enabling us to read the images faster). Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1925) The Workers Stunning scenes from Fritz Lang's silent masterpiece, Metropolis (1925). The film was produced Germany in the Babelsberg Studios and released in 1927 during the height of the Weimar Republic. It was the most expensive silent film of the time, costing approximately 7 million Reichsmark (equivalent to around $200 million USD in 2005) to make. The screenplay was written in 1924 by Lang and his wife, Thea von Harbou, and novelized by von Harbou in 1926. It is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and examines a common science fiction theme of the day: the social crisis between workers and owners in capitalism. PDT - "Phantom Of The Opera (1925)" The 1925 silent-film version of The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian, is a classic adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney in the title role as the masked, and facially disfigured 'Phantom' who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied makeup which was kept a studio secret until the film's premier. In addition to Chaney, the film also stars Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Gibson Gowland, John St. Polis and Snitz Edwards. The only surviving cast member is Carla Laemmle (born in 1909), niece of producer Carl Laemmle, who played a small role as "prima ballerina" in the film when she was about 15. The movie was adapted by Elliott J. Clawson, Frank M. McCormack (uncredited), Tom Reed (titles) and Raymond L. Schrock. It was directed by Rupert Julian, with supplemental direction by Edward Sedgwick, and Lon Chaney (unconfirmed). Cakewalkin' Babies Armstrong/Bechet 1925!!! Cakewalkin' Babies Armstrong/Bechet 1925!!! In considering which jazz tune has been my favourite I came to the conclusion that a combination of two of the best musicians playing hot jazz together in one tune should be the one. The musical strong personalities of Louis Armstrong on the one side and of Sidney Bechet on the other resulted in them going their own ways and were maybe not being too eager to play or record together. Bandleader/pianist/composer/music publisher Clarence Williams managed to arrange a few recordings with Louis and Sidney in their early years. We are very lucky to have these recordings survive. Of course there are no movies of that, so no luck for youtube,....maybe? Well, that kept me busy thinking for a while, so I searched the net for some pictures mostly from that period and I have combined this with the 1925 sound recording of Clarence Williams Blue Five of Cakewalking' Babies from Home. In the band are Clarence Williams on piano, the very popular singer Eva Taylor, who was or became Clarence's wife, trombonist Charlie Irvis, Buddy Christian on banjo, and my two heroes Louis Armstrong on cornet and Sidney Bechet on sop sax. Many of you will not have heard this masterpiece before. To me the most exciting piece of jazz are the two outchorusses of this tune. Just sheer magic. I hope you all agree. Bessie Smith - I ain't got nobody (1925) Bessie Smith (jul 9,1892 or apr.15,1894 - sep.26,1937) was Americas most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and '30s. Smith is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era, and along with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on subsequent jazz vocalists. As a way of earning money for their impoverished household, Smith and her brother Andrew began performing on the streets of Chattanooga as a duo, she singing and dancing, he accompanying on guitar; their preferred location was in front of the White Elephant Saloon at Thirteenth and Elm streets in the heart of the city's African-American community. In 1904, her oldest brother, Clarence, covertly left home by joining a small traveling troupe owned by Moses Stokes. "If Bessie had been old enough, she would have gone with him," said Clarence's widow, Maud. "That's why he left without telling her, but Clarence told me she was ready, even then. Of course, she was only a child." In 1912, Clarence returned to Chattanooga with the Stokes troupe and arranged for its managers, Lonnie and Cora Fisher, to give her an audition. She was hired as a dancer rather than a singer, because the company also included Ma Rainey. By the early 1920s, Smith had starred with Sidney Bechet in How Come?, a musical that made its way to Broadway, and spent several years working out of Atlanta, Georgia's 81 Theater, performing in black theaters along the East Coast. Following a run-in with the producer of How Come?, she was replaced by Alberta Hunter and returned to Philadelphia, where she had taken up residence. There, she met and fell in love with Jack Gee, a security guard whom she married on June 7, 1923, just as her first recordings were being released by Columbia Records. The marriage was a stormy one, with infidelity on both sides. During the marriage, Smith became the biggest headliner on the black Theater Owners Booking Association ( T.O.B.A.) circuit, running a show that sometimes featured as many as 40 troupers and made her the highest-paid black entertainer of her day. Gee was impressed by the money, but never adjusted to show business life, and especially not Smith's bisexuality. In 1929, when Smith learned of Gee's affair with another performer, Gertrude Saunders, she ended the marriage, but never sought a legal divorce. Smith eventually found a common-law husband in an old friend, Richard Morgan, who was Lionel Hampton's uncle and the antithesis of her husband. She stayed with him until her death. Roaring Twenties - Oliver Naylor's Orchestra, 1925 In 1923, a pianist Oliver Naylor formed his first band "Oliver Naylor & His Seven Aces" and in 1924 appeared in New York's famed Roseland Ballroom. They also made their first recordings in 1924. After leaving Roseland, their next venue was the Knickerbocker Grill (also in New York), and in 1925 Naylor returned to Roseland as 'Oliver Naylor's Orchestra.' During 1924-25, he recorded as 'Naylor's Seven Aces'. In 1925, the band also recorded some tunes for Victor as Oliver Naylor's Orchestra. All through the 1920's Naylor's band toured the East Coast, without achieving national fame. Thus, his band joined the family of great great forgotten orchestras of the Jazz Era. Ben Bernie's famous charleston "Sweet Georgia Brown" is played extremely hot, with the fantastic sense of the vigour and tempo of that crazy dance. The Battleship Potemkin (Sergei Eisenstein,1925)Odessa Steps Among the most discussed scenes in the history of cinema, the famous The Odessa Steps sequence from The Battleship Potemkin (1925). The scene is perhaps the best example of Eisenstein's theory on montage, and many films pay homage to the scene, including Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, and George Lucas's Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Several films spoof it, including Woody Allen's Bananas and Love and Death, Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker's Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, and the Italian comedy "il secondo tragico Fantozzi" (in English, "The Second Tragic Fantozzi Movie") Etiketler: The Battleship Potemkin Sergei Eisenstein Odessa Steps silent russian revolution soviet montage Eduard Tisse art documentary experimental short film trailer tutorial interview filmmaker reel |
