Alice In Wonderland 1903/2006 It's been a while since I uploaded anything to this account. I wanted to do something special, so I obtained and restored the very rare, first film version of Alice In Wonderland, made in England by Cecil Hepworth in 1903 (this versatile director also plays Frog in the film). The original negative is severely damaged, and much of the film has deteriorated. No known prints survive anywhere so restoration is next to impossible. However I was able to brighten it considerably and improve its overall appearance with a sepia tint. The music you will recognise as Claude Debussy's "Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Faun." Film's IMDb page: www.imdb.com/title/tt0000420/. The BBC have rescued this film from obscurity by releasing it as an extra, with commentary, on their DVD for the 1966 Jonathan Miller production of Alice in Wonderland. As informative and interesting as the audio commentary was, I find I also quite enjoy viewing this film with a classic, elegant musical accompaniment. Hepworth & Percy Stow, 1903 This 1903 short is the first version ever put on celluloid of the Lewis Carroll classic. Seen today, it's of great historic value, and it's amazing that it still exists, given that many silent films were lost forever. Cavalleria Rusticana SICILIANA (announced) 1903 Prelude: "O Lola" In 1888 the publishing house Sanzogno called for a competition for composing operas in three act, with a theme chosen by the participants. There was prize money and the immediate staging of the operas that achieved the first three places. By then, Pietro Mascagni was 25 years old and was almost unknown. He had withdrawn from the Milan Conservatory and worked as director of a company itinerant opera. No one - not even he - thought that in the short term could move on to occupy an important place in the musical life of Italy at the end of XIX Century. Mascagni knew of the contest brought and took the opportunity to make themselves known to the musicalization of the novel "Cavallería Rusticana" by Giovanni Verga, and success in Italy to be converted into a theater piece. Mascagni asked for the drafting of the text to the librettists Giovanni Targioni-Tossetti and Guido Menasci, and composed the opera in a few months. They submitted to the contest, and works between 72 participants, won the first prize. "Cavalry Rusticana" was the first and only renowned opera composed by Mascagni, resting it practically his whole life and fame. Boston trolley ride 1903 This is an excerpt of footage from a 1903 Edison Biograph film. A camera was mounted on the front of a trolley as it meandered through the streets of Boston. Edison would hire and train crews to run his not-for-sale cameras and send the crews around the world. They would shoot street scenes and then develop the film and show it in theaters the next day. Huge crowds would gather to see themselves and their cities for the first time in "motion pictures." Paper contact prints were made of the original nitrate negative for this footage and filed for copyright purposes. The negatives were all destroyed (very flammable nitrate negatives never lasted!) but the paper contact print survived at the Library of Congress where it was held for the copyright records. Ads in the New York clipper proclaim "mirror dancer" Ameta "the most elaborate act in vaudeville." They describe four dances performed by Ameta, none of which appears to be the dance featured in this film: a "shower of confetti, ribbons;" a "prismatic fountain of real water;" a fire dance; and "mysterious transparent scenery," all performed on "a full stage setting of silk plush [and] eight large French plate mirrors" (3/21/03, p. 97; 8/30/02, p. 587). "Down the Hudson" (1903) Here is an interesting little film thats been in my collection for a long time. "Down the Hudson" takes us on a break-neck speed trip along the Hudson River, which runs North & South between Albany, NY and New York City. Rather than a peaceful scenic journey, the camera was under-cranked and we are rushed thru the sites, only to slow down here & there to see a few highlights. It starts in Haverstraw Bay and travels on the river to Newburgh. It all seems to be of the west side of the Hudson too. The pointy topped peak is Little Tor. You can clearly make out Iona Island and Con Hook and the dock just south of West Point. The West Point military academy is the large block of a building just before you see the two tugboats pulling the barges. By the way, the barges with the windmills on top are icebarges, used for carrying ice. The windmills would run pumps that would pump out the melted ice/water. The West Shore railroad is great to see and Storm King is discernible as well. Finally, it is the City of Newburgh, New York that you see at the end with the steamboat Emeline docked near the ferry slip. You can also make out two signs: "Logan & MacDonald" and "Washington Baking". The film is different because of the fast-motion effect and also the fact that it was printed on paper cards to view, rather than projected on film. I hope you enjoy this little curio. Old London Street Scenes (1903) Made over 100 years ago, this footage shows a number of scenes shot around central London, taking in locations such as Hyde Park Corner, Parliament Square and Charing Cross Station. We see crowds of people disembarking from a pleasure steamer at Victoria Embankment, pedestrians dodging horse-drawn carriages in Pall Mall, and heavy traffic trotting down the Strand. There are plenty of famous landmarks to spot here, including Big Ben, the National Gallery and the Bank of England, and it is fascinating to see the similarities between the customs of "then" and "now" - the dense traffic (mainly horse-drawn, with the occasional motor car) is highly reminiscent of today's London rush hour, whilst advertising on public transport is clearly no new phenomenon - in one scene, an advert for Nestlé's Milk seems to be plastered on every other vehicle.
